Centaurus
Centaur (Centauri)
Centaurus is the ninth-largest constellation and one of the most impressive in the southern sky, containing Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to our Sun, and Omega Centauri, the largest and brightest globular cluster in the Milky Way. The constellation represents a centaur, a creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse.
📜 Mythology
Unlike the wild and violent centaurs of most Greek myths, Centaurus represents Chiron, the wise and gentle centaur who was renowned for his knowledge of medicine, music, archery, and prophecy. He tutored many famous Greek heroes including Achilles, Jason, Hercules, and Asclepius. Chiron was accidentally wounded by one of Hercules's poison arrows and, though immortal, suffered terribly. He eventually gave up his immortality to free Prometheus and was placed among the stars by Zeus in honor of his wisdom and sacrifice.
