Painter (Pictoris)
Pictor, the Painter's Easel, is a faint southern constellation created by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille. It contains the famous star Beta Pictoris, surrounded by a debris disk with a directly imaged exoplanet. Though dim, Pictor has become astronomically important as one of the best-studied examples of a planetary system in formation.
📜 Mythologie
Pictor is a modern constellation with no classical mythology. It was created by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille during his expedition to the Cape of Good Hope (1751-1752). Originally named 'Equuleus Pictoris' (the Painter's Easel), it was later shortened to Pictor. The constellation honors the visual arts and painters, fitting with Lacaille's pattern of naming southern constellations after tools of art and science.
